Newport Free Grammar School’s U16 Boys have qualified for the East of England finals to be held at Bedford School on December 8th with the prize for the top two teams of participating in the National Finals. Newport’s first game saw them facing The Perse School who have a long tradition of doing very well in indoor tournaments. However, Newport played with considerable assurance. George Pitfield who has just been selected for the U16 National Age Group Squad scored the first goal and Spencer Hill added the second while David Potter in goal and Edward Doust at the back kept out The Perse.
The second match against Thomas Deacon from Peterborough saw George Pitfield again open Newport’s account. Further goals were added through Alex Beer and Spencer Hill to take Newport through comfortably.
In the Girls’ competition Newport again faced The Perse first. With a strong starting five Newport were able to move the ball around and create a number of scoring opportunities. Victoria Hill was the first to capitalise before captain Millie Bushnell added the second. Further goals from Victoria Hill and Kate Robinson ensured a comfortable win before The Perse pulled a goal back right at the end. The second game against Kimbolton saw Mille Bushnell give Newport the lead but a close game meant that it was not until near the end when Kate Robinson added a second that Newport had some breathing space. The girl’s East of England finals are on 30th November at the University of Essex.
